What a fabulous time we had skiing out of the Ridgway Hut! We timed it perfectly for good spring conditions and were fortunate enough to recieve about 8" of new snow overnight for our tour down the Mongoose Chute the following day. The skies cleared in the late evening and a pre-dawn start saw us on our way up towards the summit of Reconnoiter Peak (ca. 13,000 ft.). We summited in perfect weather and had one of the finest views to be seen in the entire San Juan Mountain range. We scrambled back down from the summit to the base of the rock fortress to retrieve our skis and begin our decent of the highly coveted Mongoose Chute. Forty feet wide and forty degrees steep with fresh snow it was a great way to come down the mountain. 3,000 feet of smooth turns later and we were back at the hut in time for a hot lunch and then repacking for the easy ski back out to the road.
I can't wait to come back again next season. An excellent time!
